Self Introduction

My name is Chika Yamashita. I was born in Kuji, Iwate and raised in Hachinohe, Aomori. I have a sister and a brother. My sister is 25 years old, and my brother is 18 years old.

I grew up loving sports. So when I was junior high school student, I belonged to the track and field club. I was a sprinter.  When I was high school student, I was in the softball club. Recentry, I like reading and playing jigsaw puzzles.

My Development Goals(October 16, 2015→February 12,2016)

My ultimate goal  is to give English lessons by the method of thinking by myself. This is because in ETM1, I taught by the way which my group members thought in Nakano elementary school. I just approved their plan. In ETM2, I could suggest some activities. So next, I have to learn how to explain activities effectively and how teacher speak to students.(teachers voice, wording etc...) In ETM3, I tried to speak all English. So next, I want to learn some teaching techniques. In ETM,

1.I should not definitely explain why we must study English but give lessons as students can understand by themselves why learning English is important.

I would like to have a faith as a teacher.

2.I should know a lot of ways to develop classes, and have repertories of these.

I will get various views from teacher and ETM members when I watch a lot of

classes of them and listen to opinions.

3.I should grasp the situations of not only Japanese schools and foreign schools.

And I should learn teaching methods of foreigh countries.

4.I want to regard as important connection between not only elementary school

and high school but also the previous grade.

I will study hard as I can be a good teacher.

My Development in 2014 - 2016

In my development goals, I wrote about the kind of skills that I want to get in ETM4. In ETM1, I understood it is very difficult to give nice lesson. But teaching in Nakano elementary school  became very important experience to be a teacher. I hope to feel teaching is very pleasure including critical incidents.

Critical Incident 1 : In Nakano Es July 8th, 2015 (ETM 1)

I gave lesson to students of 5-2. The goal of this class was they can tell their favorite fruits.

First, we read a illustrated book "Hats!"   Secondly, we practiced pronunciations of apples, strawberries, bananas, pineapples, and lemons with gestures. And we taught expressions "I like ~." and practiced, too. Thirdly, we played a game. Finally, we told our message to the children by a short play and children spoke their impressions.

There is a incidents we did not plan but happened in class. It is the class finished earlier.  So we decided to play a game second times. But we have more about ten minutes. When we thought what we should do, Ms. Takahashi, A class teacher, said let's hold an autograh session. Because of Ms.Takahashi, we managed to finish the class.

Critical Incident 2: In Nakano Es December 1th, 2015(ETM2)

I gave lesson to students of 5-2. The object of the lesson was students can speak subject in English.

Fiest,we sang a song about day of the week. Next, we practiced how to speak subject in English with gesturing. After this, we did main activity. Third, we planned another activity. This activity is like “Darumasanga Koronda”. Finally, students write reflection sheets, and we said message.

There were 2 incidents.

1)Students can’t sing a song about day of the week. This is because students didn't know this song or they were shy.

2)Our explanation of main activity couldn’t let students understand. We did an activity over again from teacher’s suggestion. And we omitted another activity from the lesson, because we have no time.

Critical Incident:3 In Fuzoku JHS July 12, 2016(ETM3)

I taught in 1-A Fuzoku JHS with Kento Nakano and Hiroko Yusa. The class was about “Let’s shopping in English.”

In the beginning, we had a short play to connect to the contents of text book. The situation was “Kumi’s bag was broken, so she go to buy a new bag.” After that, we showed goals and practiced new words. And,  We had 3 activities.

1.Teacher read the text for two times.

First, students opened their textbook and listened teacher’s conversation with watching their textbook. Next, students read this with their partner. We had some variation. They read two parts and switched. And then students close their textbook and read.

2.Read to change commodities and prices with their partners.

We prepared 4 commodities and each prices. So students change these words in the text.

Students decided their own prices pizza, drinks, and deserts. And we demonstrate how to do shopping. We noted we don’t buy for first time.

There  were 3 incidents. 1)Students can’t memorize. In activity1, when students read the text with closing their textbook, students looked hard. This is because they don’t memorize. We should have given more reading time for students. 2)We needed to have more study teaching materials time. Our goal differed from Mr. Yoshikado’s goal. We thought “explain” means students tell what they bought. But Mr.Yoshikado said this is the part of “It’s cute.” As a result, when students write about their bought things, we must use past sentences. Students have never learned past sentences. So it was very hard for each other.  3)Teaching technique We needed some ideas how to show picture cards. In this time, students only looked at picture cards when we showed picture cards.

Critical Incident4: In Niou Es, 2016 (teaching practicum)

I taught 5nennsei students at Niou elementary school. I had 9 classes and taught 8 subjects.

I leaned and felt the following 2 things.

1)When teacher make lesson plans, you should see what students studied before.  We have to think students say related with them studied before or them experiences. It’s very important to get deep them knowledge.

2)I have to consider how to correct them answer not to regret that I spoke when students tell wrong answered.

First of all, teachers must make an atmosphere as students can feel wrong is not ashamed. And, we need to know a lot of things in addition to teach things as you teach correct answer to students.

My Teaching Philosophy (October 16, 2015→February 12,2016)

I think English should be learned with feeling useful, meaningful, and interesting. It is hard for Japanese students to study foreign language. So when we teach English:

1.we must make the pleasant atmosphere. (singing, dancing, etc)

In addition, teacher have to teach students "To make a mistake is good thing."

2.we should try to teach expressions which we speak in the daily life.

And it is necessary to communicate in English actively.

3.when I make a lesson, I should understand about students and I should become student’s viewpoint. In addition, teacher must understand what students have studied before, it is included that the learned in elementary school, and they are going to study next time. So teacher need to know systematics of class.

   4. I should give a lesson with thinking of students.

If students can’t sing a song, it stop singing and practice expression in the song. And if they can’t understand rule of activity, it start over again by judging myself.

5. Teacher must look again their lesson plans objectively, and if you need, you should reconsider it.

6. We need to see more other teacher’s lessons. If you find good teaching techniques, you should steal it.

I want to give lessons with being conscious these things.
